Single-Thread vs. Two-Thread Wayuu Bags: What Is the Difference?
A close look at stitch size, texture, time, and what shoppers should actually compare.

The short answer
Single-thread and two-thread describe the number of yarn strands worked together while crocheting the body of a mochila. A single-thread technique usually produces smaller stitches and a tighter-looking surface. Working with two strands generally creates larger stitches and allows the body to grow more quickly.
That difference is visible when two bags are photographed at the same scale. A single-thread surface tends to hold more individual stitches within each inch, while two-thread work often reads as bolder and more textured.
Does single-thread automatically mean better?
Single-thread work is often valued for its refinement and the additional stitch work it requires. Colombia’s national reference for Wayuu textiles also distinguishes mochila quality according to whether one or two threads are used.
Technique is only one part of quality, however. Even tension, clean color changes, a stable base, a finished opening, secure strap joins, and a well-made strap matter too. A dense body paired with weak finishing is not a well-resolved bag.
How to compare bags online
Look for a close-up that is sharp enough to show individual loops. Then inspect the front, back, base, opening, and strap attachment. Product descriptions should say what technique is being offered rather than relying on vague words such as premium or luxury.
Scale also matters. Compare stitch density only when the bags or photographs are similarly sized. A tightly cropped image can make any stitch appear larger than it is.
Which one should you choose?
Choose single-thread if you love a smoother, denser visual finish and value the additional handwork. Choose a two-thread piece if you prefer a chunkier texture, a particular design, or a different price point. The right bag is the one whose construction, color, usefulness, and sourcing are explained honestly.
Una Hebra focuses on refined single-thread pieces and provides close photography so the surface can be evaluated rather than simply promised.
