How to Clean a Wayuu Bag Without Losing Its Shape
A gentle, practical care routine for spots, washing, tassels, straps, and drying.

Start with the smallest intervention
For a small mark, begin with spot cleaning. Use cool water, a tiny amount of mild soap, and a clean light-colored cloth. Dab rather than scrub, and test an inconspicuous area first. Aggressive rubbing can roughen the yarn or spread the stain.
Empty the bag before cleaning and shake out dust or sand. Keep cosmetics, pens, and anything that can transfer color away from the damp surface.
When the whole bag needs washing
Hand washing is the cautious choice. Place the bag in cool water with mild soap and move it gently without twisting or wringing. Rinse thoroughly in cool water so soap does not remain between dense stitches.
Support the full bag when lifting it from the water. Wet yarn becomes heavier, and pulling it by the strap can place unnecessary force on the attachment points.
Reshape and dry flat
Press out water gently between clean towels. Restore the round base and body with your hands, then lay the bag flat or support it in its natural shape in a ventilated place away from direct heat. Do not use a tumble dryer.
Smooth the strap separately and arrange tassels so their threads dry loose and straight. Turning the bag during drying helps air reach the base and underside.
Everyday care
Store the mochila clean and dry. Avoid hanging a heavily loaded bag for long periods, which can strain the strap, and keep tassels from being crushed under other items. A loosely folded towel inside can help the body maintain its shape in storage.
Because materials and dyes can vary, always follow any care instructions supplied with your particular bag. If you are unsure, ask the seller before attempting stain removers or machine washing.
