Arhuaco vs. Wayuu vs. Kogui Mochilas: What Is the Difference?
Three distinct Indigenous textile traditions, three territories, and no interchangeable ‘Colombian bag.’

Start with the communities, not the silhouette
Mochila is a broad Spanish word for a bag, and multiple Indigenous peoples in Colombia maintain distinct bag-making traditions. Wayuu communities are associated with the La Guajira Peninsula; Arhuaco and Kogui communities are rooted in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
Similar drawstring silhouettes do not make these objects culturally interchangeable. Each belongs to its own systems of language, territory, material knowledge, use, and meaning.
Wayuu mochilas
The widely sold Wayuu shoulder mochila commonly has a crocheted body, woven or braided strap, drawstring, and vivid or graphic color combinations. It may use cotton or acrylic yarn, and geometric kanaas are important within the wider textile tradition.
There are multiple Wayuu bag forms and uses, so the colorful commercial shoulder bag is only one part of a much larger material culture.
Arhuaco and Kogui mochilas
Arhuaco mochilas are strongly associated with the Sierra Nevada and may use fique, cotton, or wool. Official craft research documents different bag names and uses, including personal bags and smaller bags for culturally specific objects.
Kogui mochilas are commonly made from fique and also from cotton. Artesanías de Colombia records the spiral construction and deep symbolic importance of these bags. Neutral fibers and restrained linear designs may look very different from many Wayuu pieces, but appearance alone should never replace correct attribution.
How to shop respectfully
Use the community’s correct name, do not blend motifs into a generic ‘tribal’ category, and seek clear information about origin and materials. Avoid sellers who borrow one people’s story to market another people’s product.
The comparison should expand appreciation, not rank cultures against one another. These are parallel living traditions rather than variations of a single fashion trend.
